Hospitals on FHIR – Implementing the EU Lab Report in Your Hospital: Medical Terminology

This second session of the Hospitals on FHIR webinar series focuses on medical terminologies and the foundations of semantic interoperability in the implementation of the EU Lab Report.
Building on the regulatory and conceptual elements introduced in the first webinar, this session explores the semantic layer that makes health data categories truly usable in practice. Participants will gain an overview of key international medical terminologies — including SNOMED CT, LOINC, ICD and UCUM — and understand how they structure, standardise and give meaning to clinical and laboratory data.
The webinar will also explain why terminologies are a prerequisite for interoperability, data reuse and cross-border data exchange, and how they are applied in modern standards such as HL7 FHIR.
Speaker:
Roberta Gazzarata, Ph.D. (HL7 Europe) – Expert in health data interoperability and medical terminology, actively involved in European and international standardisation initiatives, with a strong focus on semantic interoperability and terminology alignment in EHDS-related contexts.
Key takeaways:
- Overview of SNOMED CT, LOINC, ICD and UCUM
- How terminologies structure clinical and laboratory data
- The role of terminology in HL7 FHIR implementations
- Practical implications for hospitals and health IT vendors
Target audience:
Healthcare professionals, hospitals, laboratories, health IT vendors, interoperability architects and digital health stakeholders involved in standards-based data exchange.
