Implementing the EU Lab Report at Your Hospital – new webinars

Hospitals on FHIR, in collaboration with HL7 Europe and the XiA (Xpanding Innovative Alliance) Project, is organising a webinar series dedicated to supporting hospitals and stakeholders in implementing the EU Laboratory Report within the framework of the European Health Data Space (EHDS)

The series progressively addresses the regulatory, semantic, and technical foundations required for EHDS readiness.

Why This Series Matters

The EU Laboratory Report is one of the first concrete use cases linked to EHDS implementation.

Hospitals, laboratories, IT vendors, and public authorities need practical guidance that connects:

  • Regulation
  • Terminology
  • Technical standards
  • Real-world implementation

Through this collaboration between Hospitals on FHIRHL7 Europe, and XiA, the series contributes to strengthening interoperability skills across Europe — directly aligned with XiA’s mission to support EHDS readiness through education and structured learning pathways.

Webinar 2 : Medical Terminologies – Foundations for Semantic Interoperability

Building on the regulatory foundations introduced in the first session, this webinar explores the semantic layer that makes EHDS data categories truly usable in practice.

Participants gained an overview of the core medical terminologies used across European and international health information systems — SNOMED CT, LOINC, ICD, and UCUM — and how they structure, standardise, and give meaning to clinical and laboratory data.

The session also clarified why terminologies are a prerequisite for interoperability, data reuse, analytics, and cross-border data exchange, and how they are applied in modern standards such as HL7 FHIR

Speaker

Roberta Gazzarata, Ph.D – HL7 Europe
Expert in health data interoperability and medical terminologies, actively involved in European and international standardisation activities, with a strong focus on semantic interoperability, terminology binding, and EHDS-aligned data exchange.

Key Topics

  • Why medical terminologies are essential for semantic interoperability
  • Overview of SNOMED CT, LOINC, ICD, and UCUM
  • How terminologies structure clinical and laboratory data
  • The role of terminologies in HL7 FHIR and EHDS-ready implementations
  • Practical implications for hospitals and health IT vendors

Webinar 3 : Simplifying Readiness for the EHDS with HL7 FHIR Standards

Following the regulatory and semantic foundations, this third session focuses on the core technical standard enabling EHDS implementation: HL7 FHIR

The webinar provides a structured introduction to the FHIR paradigm — its origins, its resource-based model, and why it represents a major shift in how health data is structured, exchanged, and reused across Europe. It also clarifies the relationship between FHIR and semantic interoperability, and how standards-based architectures support EHDS readiness at hospital level.

Speaker

Luc Chatty – HL7 Europe / Hospitals on FHIR
FHIR urbanist and architect, biomedical engineer by background, serving as French Ambassador for the Hospitals on FHIR community and consultant to HL7 Europe. He supports hospitals and European initiatives in implementing FHIR-based architectures and advancing interoperability in the context of the European Health Data Space (EHDS) and innovation projects.

Key Topics

  • A short history of HL7 and the emergence of FHIR
  • Understanding FHIR resources and the resource-based model
  • The link between FHIR and semantics
  • Why FHIR represents a paradigm shift for interoperability
  • Practical implications for EHDS-ready hospital architectures
